Information about the FIAT marque
It was in 1899 that Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino opened their doors for business. The first car, which was designed by the gifted Faccioli was powered by a twin cylinder 3½ horse power engine however when the directors of Fiat insisted that the new model should have the engine at the front rather than the back Faccioli resigned. Enrico whose first car was a 1.2 litre four-cylinder model but went on to build cars that had engines of over 11,000cc replaced him. It as the Tipo of 1912 that was the first real mass-produced model. During the 1920's Fiat entered into the luxury end of the market but this was not a success for them however the Tipo 508 Brallili proved a huge success and was available in both a Touring and Sporting configuration. At the outbreak of WW2 the 500 and 1100 were the best selling models but in 1950 it was the Topolini that was to have sold over a million by 1960 followed by the Nuova 500, which had sold 3 million by 1972. During the 1970's and 80's a wider range of models was introduced including the luxury 130 coupe and the Dino Spyder and Coupe, which were both powered by a Ferrari V6. These days Ferrari is part of the huge Fiat empire.
